HNI Gunlocke

Muscatine, Iowa

Mid-American Glazing is excited to share our contribution to the transformation of the historic Free Press Building into the new headquarters for HNI’s Gunlocke division in downtown Muscatine, Iowa. Our involvement focused on the installation of new windows that complement the building’s extensive renovation and expansion, highlighting its blend of modern functionality with the rich, historical character of its surroundings. The new windows not only enhance the building’s aesthetic appeal but also improve its energy efficiency, bringing in natural light to showcase Gunlocke’s high-end wooden furniture in the office spaces and showroom.

The project, a collaboration with Gensler and OPN Architects, aimed to maintain HNI Corporation’s presence in Muscatine while consolidating multiple locations. Our work contributed to creating a cohesive look that respects the building’s heritage, featuring tin ceilings, wood floors, and steel structures, now beautifully exposed and integrated into the design. The addition of a metal-clad structure for essential amenities and the creation of a new courtyard at the intersection of Walnut Street and Second Street not only enhance the building’s functionality but also its interaction with the Muscatine downtown area and nearby greenspaces. This project underscores Mid-American Glazing’s commitment to delivering high-quality glazing solutions that respect architectural history while meeting contemporary needs.
